The state of the Philippines after the May 9, 2022 National Elections (Part 1)

The following post was initially written in Discord as a long string of messages for my overseas/international/foreign internet friends.

The original messages have been kept intact with some grammatical corrections as well as formatting modifications and minor additions for better emphasis.

Indented texts are the ones which were originally Discord messages while non-indented texts are new additions.

With that aside, the content remains the same as it was initially sent to my friends.

right now we're in massive chaos because the son (Bongbong Marcos) of a past dictator (Ferdinand E. Marcos) is threatening to become our next president // as well as the daughter (Sara Duterte) of our last president (Rodrigo Duterte) becoming vice president
policital dynasties, yall. fucking hell

anyway
you might be wondering, "is Isa ok? how is she faring?"
I'm still fairly okay, but with the way I've been vocal about the bullshit going on I might not be able to be online any longer
this country has a history of its own people being silenced by those in power

international media will tell you that we voted the dictator's son into presidency and that we are fools.
do not let them convince you.

we fought so hard. we fought so hard for the only woman running for presidency and we accumulated so many supporters and yet we failed.
wait, no. we were cheated.

how?
because of the shit we call corruption and greed
corruption and greed and power and MANIPULATION

OUR MASSES WERE MANIPULATED INTO VOTING THE DICTATOR'S SON.

lucky are the ones who are born in the middle class, and yet luckier are those who were born rich.
unfortunate are those who were born so poor that their main priority is living day by day.

votes were bought.
machines were rigged.
servers were hacked.
just for the dictator's son to be called president.
just to enable a new abuser and give him power.

please do not let the media convince you that we were fools.
we fought so hard for the right presidential candidate not to be thought like this.

Didn’t see any posts about it so here it is for the other Photosensitive folks,

Nimona has a lot of flashing lights, no intense strobing (ie Incredibles) but includes:

Alarm sequences (red lights, ‘police’ lights), explosions and gunfire

Sparks/flashing/flickering lights, firelight

Thunderstorms and lightning effects,

Flashes from color to black (hard to describe)

All within the first few minutes of the movie, frequently throughout.

It wasn’t too terrible when I watched with other lights on during the day but I tried watching it with them off and it was pretty bad. Sharing this so other people can find it would be much appreciated!

reminder for the twitter, reddit and tiktok migrants: please do not censor words here. if you censor them, people’s blacklists and mute functions wont work, especially for important content warnings (this goes for twitter as well altho that function is breaking over there). spell out the whole word in the post and the tags. do not use euphemism words like unalive. the algorithm here does not work that way (there is an algorithm. not everyone uses it, everyone uses the following tab).

the only time you should censor words is when you do NOT want them to show up in the tag, like if you’re saying something unkind about a ship you should not tag it or mention directly the ship name do it does not clog the tag, or if you’re mentioning a person or community who should not get attention or clout, or whose attention you do not want to attract, then censor it (the way one might on twitter to avoid term searching)

So, a few days ago I finished the graphic novel/comic ‘Nimona’ by NB Stevenon! (edited in 2023 to update pronouns/names)

It was great! Funny, satirical, sad, with some absolutely gorgeous art. If you haven’t read it, I 100% suggest you check it out.

But as I was digesting the story, some similarities between it and Stevenson’s more recent work on ‘She-Ra: Princesses of Power’ struck me. It occurred to me that some people might find it interesting.

Imagine, if you will…

Two orphans raised from birth as soldiers by a powerful institution, which promises its pupils that they will be fighters for what is good and right, protecting innocents from injustice. Two children among them are thick as thieves, best friends for as long as they can remember. One, however, is naturally gifted. The other remains forever in their shadow, quietly resentful.

As they near adulthood, and about to fully take their place as fully fledged warriors, however… the talented one realises the truth. That the organisation that raised them was lying, actually oppressing innocents, and using them as instruments of that oppression. 

They turn their back on everything they once fought for, becoming the organisation’s sworn enemy. Their best friend, however, stays behind, and the two become nemesis…Fighting each other at every turn, but never able to shake off the unresolved friendship and romance that still lies between them.

Am I talking about Adora and Catra, or Ballister Blackheart and Ambrious Goldenloin?

Yeah. There’s a LOT of similarities in the set up between these two pairs, although it’s FAR from 1:1.

 Which is only to be expected, of course. Nimona, to my understanding, was primarily a solo project. She-Ra, meanwhile, was written years later, is based upon a previous incarnation, and of course had a whole team of other writers, artists, executives, etc., who all would have influenced the development. Nonetheless, I think this definitely shows some similar themes that Stevenson really likes exploring. 

I’m going to dig more into that below the cut, but there shall be Nimona spoilers below! So if you’re still curious, maybe check the book out first?
